Department of Foreign Languages for the Faculty of Geography

The department was established in 1996. Its staff comprises teachers of English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese who teach these languages to geographers. German and Spanish are also taught to the students (undergraduates and postgraduates) of other sciences faculties.

 

According to certain tasks in preparing geographers of different specialties the following varieties of the course 'foreign language' are offered at the department:

1) 'Basic course' (three years – 340 hours) – for the students of departments of general geography;

2) 'Advanced (professional) course' (four years of tuition; 620 hours) – for the students of geography of foreign countries and international tourism;

3) 'Short course' (two years – 240 hours) – second foreign language for the students of geography of foreign countries and international tourism;

4) 'The course for postgraduates' (one year – 140 hours).

 

There is a wide range of audio-, video-, and multimedia materials which is used, in particular, in teaching LSP (language for specific purpose)  - video films on geography, ecology, economics, area studies.

The staff participate in many, University, all-Russia, and international conferences on linguistics and methodology of teaching. Many teach at other divisions of MSU (Russian-German Institute) and the faculty of foreign languages, supervise postgraduates of the faculty of foreign languages.
