Modern methods of compiling and running tests in foreign languages (German language)
Professor: PhD, associate professor Svetlana Gorbachevskaya
Duration: 2 terms. The course is designed for the third-, fourth- and fifth-year students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Area Studies.
Aims and objectives of the Course.
The course is designed to provide students with the main trends of development and use of testology in teaching of foreign languages, with European requirements to compiling of language competencies tests and running of them and analysis of test results as well as with methods of preparation of texts oriented to a certain level of competencies. The special attention is focused on the work with information and communication technologies (moodle, blogs, forums, computer test forms).
Course structure
- European scale of language competencies;
- Characteristics of text constructs
- Relevant materials for compiling of the tests
- Text qualifiers, aims, format and assessment methods
- Difficulty level, cognitive and psychological factors necessary for choosing appropriate texts;
- Integration of lexical and grammatical tests into test modules;
- Assessment criteria of the test results;
- Analysis of tests (A1-C2);
- The role of Internet-technologies in the work of the test-compiler

Synchronic and diachronic analysis of the vocabulary of German language.

Duration: 2 terms. The course is designed for the third-, fourth- and fifth-year students specializing in Linguistics and Intercultural Communication and studying German.
The aim of the seminar is to form and develop skills to analyse structural, semantic and pragmatic peculiarities of German vocabulary (in the modern period and in diachrony).
The following objective are to be solved:
- to enhance and extend knowledge acquired while studying theoretical and practical disciplines connected with the German language
- to inform about modern theoretical linguistic works on the issues connected with the characteristics of lexical units and methods of its analysis
- to inform about main methods and means of linguistic study of a word which are used in the modern linguistics
- to study about synchronic and historical analysis of vocabulary on the basis of system relations of the language
- to form and develop skills for further scientific work of the students

The use of information technologies in teaching German as a foreign language.

Duration: 2 terms. The course is designed for the third-, fourth- and fifth-year students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Area Studies
Aims and objectives:
To inform students of modern methods of teaching German using computer and Internet sources. The important element of the seminars is improving of linguistic, communicative and didactic competences of the students. At the seminars students exercise certain language (grammatical structures and vocabulary) and speech units and study different models of didaction. Moreover, student study to compile, conduct and analyse linguistic texts.
Themes:
- elements of speech competency of the graduates from linguistic faculties;
- linguistic norm and deviations in the modern oral and written German speech;
- productive and receptive knowledge of grammar phenomena of the German language; system-based and functional grammar in the frame of European standards A1-C1;
- analysis of text-books;
- analysis of internet sources;
- ICT as an instrument of teaching foreign languages;
- compilation and analysis of texts about German language and German Studies using ICT.

Publicistic text analysis.

Duration: 2 terms.
The seminar is designed for the third-, fourth- and fifth-year students specializing in Linguistics and Intercultural Communication and studying German.
Aims and objectives of the Seminar:
- to inform the students of the structure and rules of compiling of publicistic text;
- to learn to identify text structure on the superficial and deep level in the German-speaking publicistic discussion;
- to master specific language means.
The subject of the seminar includes studying of German vocabulary in the frame of publicistic discussion, analysis of text structure and stylistics, interpretation of the text and its pragmatic context.
